Overview
Intro2QC represents an outreach workshop and associated educational materials designed to introduce quantum computing concepts to high school students. The initiative focuses on presenting quantum computing in an approachable and engaging manner, specifically relating its relevance to solving real-world challenges. This is achieved by explaining how the behaviors of quantum systems can provide a computational advantage. The workshop content comprises an online interactive quantum programming tutorial, a complete lesson plan for STEM instructors, and presentation slides.
Research Context
Quantum computing has garnered significant attention globally, with developments in quantum engineering, algorithms, and software suggesting its potential for transformative technological advancements across various sectors. In response to this anticipated impact, governments, universities, and technology organizations are investing in quantum science, quantum readiness, and workforce development through quantum education initiatives. These initiatives include specialized university programs, public awareness campaigns, and STEM outreach activities, which are critical for fostering an understanding of quantum physics and technologies among non-experts. At the high school level, a primary objective of these efforts is to influence the teaching of 20th-century physics in STEM classrooms and to inspire future generations of quantum scientists and professionals.
Approach
The Intro2QC project developed educational materials for a single-session, 90-minute workshop aimed at high school students. The core of the approach is to explore quantum computing's utility in addressing real-world problems by illustrating how the unintuitive properties of quantum systems can confer computational benefits. The workshop materials specifically include:
- An online interactive quantum programming tutorial, accessible via the Intro2QC website.
- A full lesson plan intended for STEM instructors.
- Presentation slides, made available through a GitHub repository.
This workshop was delivered to approximately 160 students from Grades 9-12 across multiple school groups in British Columbia, Canada. This delivery took place during the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology.
Findings
The described materials, collectively known as Intro2QC, consist of an online interactive quantum programming tutorial, a complete lesson plan for STEM instructors, and presentation slides. These materials were developed to provide an approachable and engaging introduction to quantum computing for high school students. The workshop, designed to be a single 90-minute session, aims to demonstrate quantum computing's relevance to real-world problem-solving by linking the behaviors of quantum systems to computational advantage. The workshop was deployed to approximately 160 students from Grades 9-12 within several school groups located in British Columbia, Canada.
Why This Matters
Investing in quantum education initiatives, such as Intro2QC, supports the development of a diverse and talented workforce necessary for the future impact of quantum computing. By fostering a deeper understanding of quantum physics and technologies among non-experts and high school students, these programs contribute to reshaping STEM education and inspiring the next generation of quantum scientists and professionals.
