Overview
New York studios Schlaich Bergermann Partner (SBP) and Snøhetta collaborated to replace the Sentry Bridge in Upstate New York. The new structure is a steel half-arch span that is mounted on one side of a gorge and extends as a cantilever to the opposite side.
Research Context
The project involved replacing an existing structure also named Sentry Bridge, located within Watkins Glen State Park. The original bridge was described as a decaying structure.
Approach
SBP and Snøhetta designed a steel half-arch span. This design utilizes a cantilever method, where the structure is secured on one rock face of the gorge and projects outwards to connect with the other side.
Findings
- The replacement bridge for the Sentry Bridge is a steel half-arch design.
- The new bridge is characterized by its cantilevered construction.
- The cantilever design involves mounting the structure on one side of a gorge and extending it across to the other side.
- The previous Sentry Bridge was in a state of decay.
Why This Matters
The replacement of the decaying Sentry Bridge ensures the continued functionality of the crossing within Watkins Glen State Park. The new structural approach provides a modern solution for spanning the gorge.
