Overview
Skroget, a community sauna and public deck located in Båtsfjord, Norway, was designed by the student architecture studio Rare Collectiv. The structure incorporates a skeletal frame constructed from reclaimed timber, enveloping an elongated form. This design element is described as evoking the hull of a ship. The facility is situated overlooking the busy harbor of Båtsfjord, an area recognized as Norway's fishing capital.
Approach
The design and construction of Skroget were undertaken by 15 students enrolled in the Design in Context course. This project involved developing a community sauna and public deck for the Båtsfjord harbor. A key architectural feature is the use of a skeletal frame composed of reclaimed timber. This framework surrounds the sauna's elongated shape. The specific aesthetic intention behind the timber ribs was to suggest the form of a ship's hull.
Research Context
The project was executed within an academic framework, specifically by students from the Design in Context course. The location, Båtsfjord, is known as Norway's fishing capital, and the structure is positioned to overlook its active harbor. The design brief involved creating a community facility that included both a sauna and a public deck.
