Overview
Bastiaan Jongerius Architecten, a Dutch studio, undertook the transformation of a 1970s farmhouse located outside Amsterdam. This project involved retaining and extending the existing timber-and-brick structure, which was originally intended for demolition. The updated property, named Longhouse Farm, is situated in Zunderdorp.
Approach
The studio's approach to the farmhouse involved an extension of its timber structure. For the exterior, Bastiaan Jongerius Architecten utilized black-metal panels and charred wood. These materials were applied to update the building's facade. The initial consideration for the 1970s farmhouse was demolition; however, Bastiaan Jongerius Architecten chose to preserve and expand it instead.
The original building was a timber-and-brick farmhouse. The studio's work included the creation of a series of extensions. The transformation resulted in an updated exterior that incorporates specific material choices: black timber and metal.
